An IP geolocation MCP server is a Model Context Protocol endpoint that lets an AI client call a tool which returns the country, city, ISP, ASN, and reputation of any IP address. Instead of asking the model to guess, the client sends the address to a live service and gets structured data back. IPIPAI runs one at https://ipipai.com/mcp with eleven tools behind it.
This matters because IP questions look easy to a language model and are actually impossible for it. An LLM does not hold a current IP-to-city database, cannot read an ASN from a bare address, and has no way to know whether an IP was flagged yesterday. Without a tool call you get a confident-sounding answer that may be months or years out of date. An MCP server replaces that guess with a query.
Why an AI Client Needs a Tool Instead of a Guess
There are three concrete failure modes when a model answers IP questions from memory:
- No live mapping. Geolocation databases change constantly. A model trained last year cannot know that an ISP renumbered a block or that a hosting provider opened a new region.
- No arithmetic on IP space. Models are unreliable at decoding arbitrary IPv4 or IPv6 strings, especially ASN and prefix relationships.
- No reputation context. Whether an address is a VPN, a Tor exit, a datacenter node, or blacklisted is a live lookup, not a fact stored in weights.
An MCP tool fixes all three by making the model call a deterministic service and then reason over the returned JSON. The model still writes the explanation; it just stops inventing the data.
What the IPIPAI Geolocation MCP Server Exposes
The endpoint implements Streamable HTTP and JSON-RPC 2.0. The tools most relevant to location and network work are:
| Tool | What it returns | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
lookup_ip | Geolocation, ISP, ASN, IP type, risk score, and a composite verdict | Full IP intelligence in one call |
lookup_ip_location | Country and city only, lightweight and fast | Quick location checks in a loop |
check_ip_reputation | Proxy/VPN flags, Tor exit status, blacklist and hosting classification | Deciding whether a node is trustworthy |
rate_ip_node | Overall 0β100 score and letter grade for VPS and proxy nodes | Ranking candidate nodes before purchase |
check_service_access | Whether a named service is reachable from a given IP location | Checking unlock feasibility |
lookup_domain_whois | Registrar, creation and expiry dates, name servers | Domain ownership context |
lookup_mac_vendor | Manufacturer from the OUI prefix | Device identification |
resolve_dns | A and AAAA records | Confirming a domain resolves |
ping_host | Min, average, max latency and packet loss | Reachability and latency checks |
trace_route | Hop-by-hop path with latency per hop | Locating where a route slows down |
check_website_availability | Whether major sites are reachable from the server location | Regional outage triage |
Connect It in About a Minute
Remote HTTP MCP servers are configured with a URL, not a local command. For Claude Desktop or Claude Code, add an entry like this to the MCP configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"ipipai": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://ipipai.com/mcp"
}
}
}
For Cursor, the same server block goes into ~/.cursor/mcp.json. After restarting the client, ask it to list its MCP tools. If the eleven tools appear, the handshake succeeded. If they do not, the troubleshooting order is always: endpoint URL, network reachability, then transport type. Our MCP config guide covers the exact field names, and connection troubleshooting walks through the common failures.
Three Prompts That Work Well
Once connected, the quality of the answer depends on asking for a tool call explicitly. These three prompts consistently produce useful output:
- "Use the IPIPAI lookup_ip tool on
203.0.113.42, then explain the risk score and whether it looks residential or datacenter." - "Compare two candidate proxy IPs with check_ip_reputation and rate_ip_node, and recommend the one with lower detection risk."
- "Check whether Netflix is reachable from
198.51.100.7, then list the assumptions behind that result."
The second sentence matters: asking the model to explain or compare forces it to use the returned fields instead of summarizing vaguely. For a broader list of prompts, see MCP use cases and examples.
Accuracy and Privacy Limits
Tool output is only as good as the underlying databases. City-level geolocation is usually right but not always exact, and the honest framing is a confidence range rather than a pinpoint. If you need to understand how precise that data can be, read how accurate IP geolocation really is before you build a decision on top of it.
On privacy: every IP you send to a remote MCP server leaves your machine and reaches the service. That is the same tradeoff as any web lookup, but it is worth saying out loud. Do not send customer IPs to a third-party endpoint unless your policy allows it, and prefer a self-hosted deployment when the data is sensitive.
Where to Go Next
If you only need to check one address, the web interface is faster than wiring up a client: use the IP lookup tool. If you want the full tool contract, tool names, and schemas, read the IPIPAI MCP documentation. If you are still deciding whether MCP is the right integration shape, what an MCP server is and MCP versus plugin cover the tradeoffs.
Add the endpoint and test one call. Point your client at https://ipipai.com/mcp, run lookup_ip on an address you already know, and check whether the returned city and ASN match reality. That single test tells you more than any setup guide. Full tool list: MCP docs.
FAQ
What is an IP geolocation MCP server?
It is a Model Context Protocol endpoint that exposes a callable tool for turning an IP address into location, ISP, ASN, and reputation data. The AI client calls it instead of guessing.
Is the IPIPAI MCP server free?
The remote endpoint can be added without an API key for normal interactive use. The same lookups are available through the web tools if you prefer not to configure a client.
Why not just ask the chatbot where an IP is located?
Because the model has no live IP database. Without a tool call it produces a plausible guess, which is the exact failure an MCP server removes.
Which clients support remote HTTP MCP?
Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and Cursor all support HTTP MCP entries. Any client implementing Streamable HTTP transport can connect to the same URL.
