What is Online Speed Test?

An online speed test is a diagnostic tool that measures your internet connection performance. IPIPAI's speed test evaluates four critical metrics: download speed, upload speed, ping (latency), and jitter — all displayed on a real-time gauge with multi-node testing capability.

What is Download Speed?

Download speed measures how fast data flows from the internet to your device. It's measured in Mbps (Megabits per second). For reference: streaming HD video requires 5 Mbps, 4K video requires 25 Mbps, and video conferencing needs 3-5 Mbps. Our speed test connects to Cloudflare's global CDN to measure your actual download throughput.

What is Upload Speed?

Upload speed measures how fast data flows from your device to the internet. This matters for video calls, cloud backups, sending large files, and live streaming. Most residential internet plans have asymmetric speeds — upload is typically 10-20% of download speed. Our test uses Cloudflare's upload endpoint to measure your real upload throughput.

What is Ping (Latency)?

Ping measures the round-trip time for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower ping is better for gaming, video calls, and real-time applications. Below 20ms is excellent, 20-50ms is good, 50-100ms is acceptable, and above 100ms may cause noticeable lag. Our test sends multiple ping requests and calculates the average latency.

What is Jitter?

Jitter measures the variation in ping times. Low jitter means your connection is stable and consistent. High jitter causes stuttering in video calls, buffering during streaming, and lag spikes in games. Our speed test calculates jitter by measuring the difference between the fastest and slowest ping responses.

How to Improve Your Internet Speed?

Several factors affect your internet speed: network congestion during peak hours, distance from your ISP's server, Wi-Fi signal strength, number of connected devices, and your ISP's bandwidth plan. To optimize speed, use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi, connect to the 5GHz band, limit the number of active devices, and test during off-peak hours.

What is a Good Speed Test Result?

Good speed depends on your usage: basic browsing needs 1-5 Mbps, HD streaming requires 5-10 Mbps, 4K streaming needs 25-50 Mbps, online gaming requires 3-6 Mbps with low latency (<50ms), and video conferencing needs 3-5 Mbps upload. Our speed test shows real-time results on an animated gauge that auto-scales based on your connection speed.

Multi-Node Testing

IPIPAI's speed test supports multiple testing nodes across the globe, including Cloudflare CDN nodes in 15+ countries and community nodes. Select different nodes to compare speeds from different regions and diagnose geo-specific network issues. This is especially useful for businesses that need consistent connectivity to servers in specific regions.

Speed Test vs Ping Test vs Traceroute

While our speed test measures bandwidth and latency, our ping test focuses solely on network responsiveness, and traceroute maps the complete path your data takes to reach its destination. For comprehensive network diagnostics, use all three tools together: speed test for bandwidth, ping test for latency, and traceroute for routing issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my speed test result different from my ISP's advertised speed?

ISP advertised speeds are maximum theoretical speeds. Actual speeds are affected by network congestion, Wi-Fi loss, router performance, and the number of connected devices. A speed test result of 70-80% of your plan speed is normal.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps (Megabits per second) is used by ISPs to describe bandwidth. MB/s (Megabytes per second) is used for file downloads. 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps. So a 100 Mbps connection can download files at approximately 12.5 MB/s.

How often should I run a speed test?

Run a speed test when you experience slow browsing, buffering during streaming, lag in gaming, or poor video call quality. For regular monitoring, test at different times of day to identify peak-hour congestion patterns.

Can I use this speed test on mobile?

Yes, our speed test works on mobile browsers. For the most accurate mobile results, test on a stable Wi-Fi connection or 5G/LTE network. Close other apps to prevent background data usage from affecting results.
